IPO launches new Application Numbering format of Indian Patent Applications and Request for Examinations

The Indian Patent Office (IPO) has adopted a new Application Numbering format of Indian Patent Applications and Request for Examinations (RFE) and made effective from 01 January 2016. However, Application Numbers/Request for examination numbers that have already been allotted shall continue to be maintained.

The new numbering system for Patent applications shall have 12 characters fixed length numeric standard Patent Application Format, type of application and application number.

New format is – YYYYJTNNNNNN

Where,

  • “YYYY” denotes four digit fixed length “Year of filing”
  • “J” denotes fixed length single digit “Jurisdiction” in numerals (1 for Delhi, 2 for Mumbai, 3 for Kolkata, & 4 for Chennai)
  • “T” denotes fixed length single digit “type of application” in numerals:
    • 1 for ordinary application;
    • 2 for ordinary divisional application;
    • 3 for ordinary patent of division application;
    • 4 for conventional application;
    • 5 for divisional of conventional application;
    • 6 for patent of addition of conventional application;
    • 7 for National Phase Entry from PCT Application;
    • 8 for divisional of National Phase Entry from PCT Application;
    • 9 for patent of addition of National Phase Entry from PCT Application;
  • “NNNNNN” denotes 6 digits fixed length common continuous running serial number applicable for all Patent Offices in India. It is unique and sequentially incremented for all 4 offices.

Likewise, Request for Examination number format has been amended as follows:

For regular request for examination, format will be – RYYYYJNNNNNN

  • Where,
    • “R” denotes request for examination under rule 24B(1)(i);
    • “YYYY” denotes four digit fixed length “Year of filing”;
    • “J” denotes fixed length single digit “Jurisdiction” in numerals (1 for Delhi, 2 for Mumbai, 3 for Kolkata, & 4 for Chennai); and
    • “NNNNNN” denotes 6 digits fixed length common continuous running serial number applicable for all Patent Offices in India.

For express request for examination, format will be – XYYYYJNNNNNN

  • Where,
    • “X” denotes request for examination under rule 20(4)(ii);
    • “YYYY” denotes four digit fixed length “Year of filing”;
    • “J” denotes fixed length single digit “Jurisdiction” in numerals (1 for Delhi, 2 for Mumbai, 3 for Kolkata, & 4 for Chennai); and
    • “NNNNNN” denotes 6 digits fixed length common continuous running serial number applicable for all Patent Offices in India.
